Since January, crime has fallen by 9 percent in Irving. This adds to the historical six-year downward trend in the total crime rate. Equally as noteworthy is a comparison of figures between June 2009 and June 2010, which shows a 31 percent decrease in crime. All signs point to a safer city.
Law enforcement officials have intensified interdepartmental and community partnerships to continue building on the trend of safety in Irving. These efforts are yielding exceptional results including the following mid-year highlights:
“Irving is fortunate to have community members who are willing to work with law enforcement to reduce crime and leadership that holds public safety as a priority,” said Police Chief Larry Boyd. “The support we receive enables us to build on the trend of reduced crime and increased public safety for the Irving community.”
Contributing to the curtailment of the city’s crime rate are a number of strategic measures recently implemented by police including the city’s apartment crime reduction program.
Representatives from apartment complexes that exceeded established crime thresholds were tagged for mandatory participation in a program that offered training facilitated by law enforcement officials.
“Since the program has been put in place, police officers have had the chance to discuss the importance of adequate lighting, security and other crime deterrents with representatives from several complexes,” said Sgt. Danny Webb.
In addition, police have customized plans to increase safety at participating communities. Originally, 12 Irving complexes qualified for the program. Within six months, half of the communities have been brought below the established crime thresholds.
