On Thursday, June 8, 2023 at 4:38pm, Dallas Police Department received a call regarding a person in a black Lexus who had a handgun in his lap and had stated that he had thoughts of “suicide by cop”, and stated that he was in the parking lot across from 111 Commerce in Dallas.
Suicide by cop, also known as suicide by police or law-enforcement-assisted suicide, is a suicide method in which a suicidal individual deliberately behaves in a threatening manner, with intent to provoke a lethal response from a public safety or law enforcement officer to end their own life.
Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputies responded and located the vehicle at 5:00pm. As deputies began to check on the welfare of the driver, he drove from the parking lot with units following, and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit went around several service roads of IH30 and IH35 and then continued westbound on IH30 at about 5:18 PM. Traffic became congested, and the driver continued to speed up, then exited the highway.
Deputies terminated the pursuit but could still see the driver ahead of them and stated that the vehicle was now traveling on flat tire. Supervision confirmed that the pursuit was still terminated. As deputies exited at Randol Mill Rd exit to turn around, they observed the driver pull into the parking lot of AT&T Stadium and run on foot into the stadium while clutching his waistband.
Arlington PD was notified and responded. Soon after, the subject was observed running away from the stadium on Randol Mill Rd. Deputies and Arlington PD officers quickly converged on the subject, with an Arlington PD negotiator and K9 officers, and after a few minutes the subject was taken into custody without further incident. The subject had an active probation violation warrant out for Possession of a Controlled substance, issued by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department. The 9MM handgun was located within AT&T Stadium by Arlington PD officers.
