In a decisive move, the Arlington Independent School District (AISD) Board of Trustees announced their appointment of Dr. Steven Wurtz as the interim superintendent on June 13, 2023. This decision comes as AISD continues its search for a permanent replacement for Dr. Marcelo Cavazos, who will retire in August.
Board President Melody Fowler expressed her confidence in Dr. Wurtz, stating, "We are pleased that Dr. Wurtz will serve in this role, and we're confident he'll provide steady leadership during this transitional period. He has a firm understanding of the district's strategic priorities, and we know he is committed to delivering superior educational opportunities to our students."
Dr. Wurtz brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record of educational leadership. His journey began in the Irving Independent School District (ISD) in 2000, where he started as a bilingual teacher and quickly ascended to the position of assistant principal. He subsequently served as a principal in the Grand Prairie ISD before returning to Irving ISD as a principal and division director of elementary schools. Ten years ago, Dr. Wurtz joined AISD as the area superintendent of elementary schools and later assumed the role of chief academic officer.
Expressing his honor at assuming the role of interim superintendent, Dr. Wurtz stated, "My main focus will be maintaining a high-quality learning experience, ensuring smooth operations, and fostering a positive environment for students and staff."
Effective June 14, Dr. Wurtz will assume the responsibilities of interim superintendent. However, Dr. Cavazos, who will retire in August, will continue to contribute to the district in an advisory capacity until August 31, 2023.
As Arlington ISD enters this transitional period, the district can rely on Dr. Wurtz's extensive experience and dedication to educational excellence. The search for a permanent superintendent will undoubtedly continue, with the AISD community eagerly awaiting the announcement of their new leader.
