Accident Claims Life of Elderly Man Riding Electric Bicycle in Arlington

A devastating accident involving a pickup truck and an electric bicycle occurred yesterday morning, resulting in the tragic death of an 89-year-old cyclist. The Arlington Police Department responded to the scene on the 6700 block of New York Avenue at approximately 11:25 a.m.

Upon their arrival, officers found the elderly cyclist lying unresponsive in the roadway. Urgent medical attention was immediately provided, and the injured individual was rushed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the authorities revealed that the cyclist had entered the roadway, traveling from east to west, when the collision occurred. The incident took place when the cyclist collided with a 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche traveling southbound along New York Avenue.

The driver of the Chevrolet Avalanche acted responsibly and promptly stopped at the scene of the accident. Recognizing the severity of the situation, they immediately dialed emergency services to report the incident. At present, no charges have been filed against the driver. However, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The victim was identified as 89-year-old Byron Alexander Lightbody of Arlington.  The cause of death was blunt force injury.
