Over the course of time, Irving has been known to be a quiet city when it comes to natural disasters. Irving has seen its share of hail Storms, wind storm with some being mild to severe and even some close calls when it comes to tornadoes…but EARTHQUAKES!!! It’s not every day we feel the ground shake under us while typing away at work under the greatest invention of fluorescent lighting or while having a cup of coffee during the morning news. Mother nature always lets us know she’s there in way shape or form.
Irving has been known to receive a little shake, rattle, and roll from time to time. In 2008 there were a "series of earthquakes" reported by the U.S. Geological Survey in North Texas felt in Grand Prairie and Irving ranging from 2.0 to 3.0 on the Richter scale. In 2009, a 3.3 magnitude quake with an epicenter in North Arlington felt throughout surrounding cities.
On October 13 2010 at 9:06 am according to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake was felt near Norman, Okla. sitting right around 170 miles from Dallas. The quake made its way down to Irving, TX with enough strength to rattle some souls. Some or should I say most, native to Texas have never felt an earthquake but on October 13th some had the privilege to experienced one for the first time. While others, raised in areas where earthquakes are common who felt the quake, still enjoyed and even “miss the quakes”.
So yes, Irving did experience an earthquake, not caused by gas drilling but my mother nature herself.
