Dallas Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting: Suspect Wanted for Murder

The Dallas Police Department is actively investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place on August 7, 2023, in the 3700 block of South Tyler Street (Five Mile Creek). The incident involved officers from the U.S. Marshals Service – North Texas Fugitive Task Force and local law enforcement agencies.

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on August 7th, the U.S. Marshals Service – North Texas Fugitive Task Force was executing an arrest warrant for 36-year-old Corey Thomas. Thomas was wanted in connection with a murder that occurred on July 24, 2023, on Mentor Street in Dallas. The suspect was located inside a pick-up truck at an apartment complex.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Task Force Officers, including a U.S. Marshal, a Mesquite Police Officer, and Dallas Police Officers Matthew Bacon and Edgar Morales, approached the suspect's vehicle in an attempt to execute the arrest. The officers strategically positioned their vehicles to block any potential escape routes.

Corey Thomas, who was seated in the driver's seat of the pick-up truck, attempted to exit from the passenger side door but was blocked by the officers' vehicles. The initial findings of the investigation suggest that Thomas then produced a firearm and pointed it towards the arresting officers.

In response to the threat, all four officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect. Immediate medical attention was provided as Task Force officers requested the assistance of Dallas Fire Rescue. Corey Thomas was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at 10:47 a.m.

It has been reported that none of the officers involved sustained injuries during the incident. The recovered firearm was found within the stolen vehicle. Additionally, Corey Thomas had an outstanding warrant for deadly conduct in Garland, in addition to the warrant for murder.

Regrettably, none of the officers were wearing body-worn cameras as they were operating under a federal memorandum of understanding, which is currently under review for an amendment by the department.

This marks the seventh officer-involved shooting involving a Dallas Police officer in 2023. The department remains committed to a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident. The Dallas County District Attorney's Office and the Office of Community Police Oversight have been notified and are actively engaged in the ongoing investigation.

To promote transparency, the Dallas Police Department has decided to release available surveillance footage of the incident. The investigation is being led by the DPD Special Investigations Unit as they work diligently to uncover the details surrounding the officer-involved shooting.
