Thanksgiving Camp: The Parks and Recreation Department is welcoming parents and guardians to register students, grades K-5, for the Thanksgiving Camp being offered from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 22-24 at the recreation centers listed below. Featured activities include games, crafts and a field trip. Contact the recreation for pricing, registration and other details.

Bugs of the World: Jungle Jim will showcase live insects from around the world beginning at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at the East Branch Library, 440 S. Nursery Road, Suite 103. The free showcase is presented as part of the Many Voices program series sponsored by the Friends of the Irving Public Library. All ages are welcome and no registration is required. Tree Planting: The community is invited to join Mayor Herbert A. Gears and representatives from the National Football League (NFL) for a Super Bowl Tree Planting Event from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 20 at Bird’s Fort Trail Park, 5756 Riverside Drive. As NFL representatives join local volunteers in the planting of 100 trees, there will be games for all ages including a “Fun Zone” where fans can test their football skills and abilities.

Holiday Closings: In observance of Thanksgiving, libraries will close at 5 p.m. Nov. 24, recycling centers will be closed Nov. 25, and there will be no residential trash, curbside recycling or brush collection Nov. 25-26. All city offices, including those listed below, will be closed to the public Nov. 25-26.

  • Irving Arts Center
  • Libraries
  • Recreation centers

The Irving Arts Center box office and galleries will open for normal business hours Nov. 26. North Lake Aquatic Center will remain closed Nov. 27-28. All other offices and services will resume normal business hours Nov. 27.
