At approximately 6:30 pm on September 28, 2023, the Arlington Police Department, Arlington Fire Department, and Arlington EMS responded to reports of an active shooter at Vandergriff Honda, located at 1104 W. I20 Highway. The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Abbas Al-Mutairy, a former employee of the dealership recently terminated from his position, had opened fire within the premises. Al-Mutairy had an AR-style rifle.
Upon arrival, officers located and engaged the suspect. In response to the suspect's threatening actions, multiple officers discharged their service weapons, striking the suspect. Al-Mutairy was immediately subdued and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. His condition remains under medical supervision.
None of the officers involved in the incident sustained injuries. Additionally, all employees and customers present at the dealership during the time of the incident escaped unharmed.
As per standard protocol following any use of police firearms, two investigations are now underway. The first is a criminal investigation scrutinizing the entire episode, while the second is an administrative investigation evaluating adherence to department policies and procedures.
Al-Mutairy has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant and one count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Further charges might be filed pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. The eastbound frontage road of I-20 was temporarily closed during the police investigation.
