Not only will this enhancement bring a new look to the boulevard, the lights also are better for the environment. Previous lighting fixtures used overhead and underground wiring.
By converting to solar power, the city is reducing enough emissions to equal the planting of 76 acres of trees per year. In addition, the new lights are off the electrical grid, produce their own power and will save the city more than $1 million over the first three years.
“Irving’s goal is to reduce energy costs and demonstrate the many uses and benefits of renewable energy,” said Kathryn Guerra, grant project manager. “This project has garnered national attention as well as recognition from the U.S. Department of Energy.”
In addition to reducing the city’s carbon footprint, improving air quality and saving money, the newly installed LED lights will contribute to a safer community by ensuring roadways and sidewalks are well lit.
Lights can store up to five days of power to guarantee uninterrupted service during inclement or cloudy weather.
The lighting fixtures are part of the larger vision for a more vibrant boulevard.
