Arlington 911 Calltaker Receives Letter of Commendation for Assisting Rare On-Call Childbirth

In the early hours of October 13, 2023, at 2:43 am, Calltaker Nancy Weaver of the Arlington Emergency Dispatch received an extraordinary 911 call that led to the successful delivery of a newborn.

The emergency call was placed by the husband of an Arlington resident who was going into labor. Remarkably, the caller was revealed to be an off-duty Arlington Police Officer, displaying an unusual calmness from the outset of the call, which initially masked the urgency of the situation.

As the call progressed, Calltaker Weaver skillfully engaged in a dialogue with the caller, deducing the imminent nature of the delivery. A few minutes into the call, the situation escalated rapidly, requiring Weaver to provide step-by-step delivery instructions directly to the expecting father.

Guiding the father through the process, from managing contractions to improvising with a piece of string to tie the umbilical cord, Calltaker Weaver maintained her composure throughout. The culmination of their efforts resulted in the healthy delivery of a newborn son at 2:48 am.

In recognition of her exceptional performance, Fire Chief/Director of Emergency Management, Bret Stidham, issued a letter of commendation, stating, "The actions of Calltaker Weaver embody the pinnacle of AFD's mission and represent this department in the highest and proudest manner."
