Shooting in Dallas Claims Four Lives; Suspect Dead After Pursuit and Self-Inflicted Gunshot

On December 3, 2023, at approximately 4:20 pm, Dallas Police responded to a shooting call in the 9700 block of Royce Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered five individuals shot at the residence.

The victims were identified as Jose Lopez, 50, Karina Lopez, 33, and Vanessa DeLaCruz, 20, who lost their lives at the scene. A 15-year-old female and a one-year-old boy were transported to a local hospital. The one-year-old later succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the hospital.  The teen girl was treated and subsequently released. A 13-year-old female present during the shooting was not harmed.

Further investigation led to the identification of the suspect, 21-year-old Byron Carillo, who was wearing an ankle monitor for a 2021 Aggravated Assault charge. Carillo removed the ankle monitor, either before or immediately after committing the offense.

Following the shooting, Carillo fled the scene and later stole a vehicle, heading south on I-35. Highway Patrol located the suspect in the Austin area. A pursuit ensued, leading to Carillo crashing the stolen vehicle into a ditch. He then attempted to evade officers on foot.  When officers got close to Carillo, he took his own life by shooting himself in the head, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death in custody of Byron Carillo is currently under investigation by the Texas Rangers.
