Fatal Crash Under Texan Trail Overpass Claims Life of 77-Year-Old Grapevine Man

On Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at approximately 1:15 pm, Grapevine Police and Fire/EMS responded to 9-1-1 calls reporting a car crash under the Texan Trail overpass on westbound E SH-114. Bystanders had managed to pull the driver from the vehicle and initiated CPR before emergency services arrived.

Fire Department personnel transported the patient to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Grapevine. Despite the collective efforts to save the driver's life, the individual was pronounced deceased at 1:46 pm.

The crash resulted in damage to a section of guardrail and a light pole. The affected stretch of the roadway was closed for just over an hour to facilitate traffic officers' investigation and allow crews to repair the damage and clear debris. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Traffic investigators determined that the driver veered off the roadway to the right, colliding with the guardrail and light pole before striking the support pillar of the overhead railroad bridge.

The precise cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the deceased driver as 77-year-old John Leslie Cooper, a resident of Grapevine.
