Gunfire Erupts in Mesquite: Two Injured in Apparent Misfire, Child Rushed to Hospital

On Sunday, December 31, 2023, at approximately 7:07 P.M., Mesquite Police Officers responded to a shooting incident in the 1600 block of Springwood Drive. Dispatch informed the officers that two individuals at the residence had been struck by gunfire.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered an adult male with a gunshot wound to the neck and a small child with a gunshot wound to the head. The adult male received on-site treatment by Mesquite Fire Department personnel, while the child was transported to a local hospital. Both individuals' injuries are considered non-life threatening.

While en route to the initial shooting call, officers were alerted to another incident in the 1700 Block of Arial Drive. There, an adult male reported that while driving home minutes earlier on Springwood Drive, he observed a parked vehicle in the street. As he attempted to navigate around it, multiple gunshots were heard. Upon reaching home, he discovered his vehicle had been struck multiple times by gunfire and promptly contacted Mesquite Police.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the residence and the two individuals injured were not the intended targets of the shooting. The incident remains under investigation, and further details will be released as they become available.

Authorities urge anyone with information about the crime to contact the Mesquite Police Department at 972-285-6336. Alternatively, they can reach Investigator A. Soto at 972-216-6704 or via email at majorcrimes@mesquitepolice.org. The investigation is ongoing.
