On January 10, 2024, at approximately 2:40 p.m., the Dallas Police Department responded to a shooting call at a townhome complex in the 2100 block of North Fitzhugh Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a 6-year-old girl inside a residence who had sustained a gunshot wound. The child was promptly transported to a local hospital in critical condition but, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that a handgun was left unsecured within the residence. At the time of the incident, there were two adults and two other juveniles present. The circumstances leading to the child's shooting remain unknown at this time.
In connection to the incident, Damariya Sowels, 19, was arrested for Tampering with Physical Evidence and unrelated warrants. The investigation is ongoing.
