City Partnership with Schools, Colleges Promotes Environmental Sustainability

A city-secured grant of $70,000 from the North Central Texas Council of Governments via the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is enabling local students to promote sustainability. Grant funding has been funneled to students at Irving Independent School District high schools, North Lake College and the University of Dallas who are enrolled in the IrvingYES program.

“IrvingYES students represent a wide variety of groups within the participating schools and colleges,” said City of Irving Senior Community Outreach Coordinator Fran Witte. “What’s exciting is that the IrvingYES program has encouraged students to determine what areas that they would like to improve on their individual campuses and in the community.”

IrvingYES includes discussion and activities related to waste diversion, recycling, composting, energy, water conservation, community gardening, and air quality and transportation. The project, scheduled to last through the entire school year, is designed to give participating students a look at their environmental impact. A Green Summit is being planned for the spring to give all of the students an opportunity to meet and share ideas about ways to green their community as well as influence their peers and family.
