Rabies Alert in Grapevine: Skunk Tests Positive

On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, an unwell skunk was discovered in Grapevine near N. Park Blvd. and Redwood Trail. Subsequent tests conducted by the Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed the presence of the rabies virus in the skunk.

Residents who suspect exposure to the skunk at or near the specified location are advised to promptly contact Grapevine Animal Services. If there are concerns about pet exposure, owners are urged to seek immediate care from a veterinarian.

Wild animals, particularly high-risk vectors like skunks, serve as reservoirs for the rabies virus. To safeguard yourself and your family, ensure that your dog, cat, or ferret is vaccinated for rabies by a veterinarian. Maintain up-to-date vaccinations for your pets, and prevent interactions between pet animals and wildlife. Refrain from feeding or interacting with wildlife, and educate children on safe practices around both domestic and wild animals.

If you encounter an ill or injured wild animal in Grapevine, promptly notify Animal Services at 817.410.3370 extension 2.

Be vigilant for signs of rabies in pets or wildlife, such as alterations in behavior—such as wild animals appearing unusually "friendly" or pets becoming suddenly aggressive. Additionally, observe for difficulties in walking, eating, or drinking, which may indicate a potential rabies infection.
