Arlington Police Release Body Cam Footage of Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting on I-20

Arlington Police Department (APD) has released body camera footage capturing the incident involving the fatal shooting of Sean McKay on Thursday, February 8, 2024.  The footage provides a visual account of the events leading up to the altercation between McKay and the responding officers.

On that Thursday afternoon, an Arlington PD motorcycle officer conducting traffic enforcement on I-20 stopped a vehicle for erratic driving in the westbound lanes. Despite signaling the driver, identified as 49-year-old Sean McKay, to exit at Green Oaks Boulevard, the vehicle stopped on the left shoulder after crossing multiple lanes, putting himself and the Officer at risk.

Approaching the driver, the officer instructed McKay to exit the vehicle. A nearby Kennedale Police officer also stopped to assist. Despite repeated instructions, McKay refused to hand over his keys or exit the vehicle.

When attempts were made to remove him, McKay resisted, retrieved a handgun from the front passenger's seat, and ignored commands to drop the weapon. Consequently, the APD officer fired three shots, striking McKay, who was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital.

No officers were injured.

According to the Arlington Police Department, criminal and administrative investigations into the incident are ongoing.
