Irving Cares announces paid summer intership opportunity for college student

Irving Cares is now interviewing full-time college students for a paid summer internship in Employment Services. The intern’s responsibilities will include connecting people to resources to help them find jobs, identifying job leads, coaching clients to obtain employment, managing client files and implementing a Job Search Seminar. The internship is eight weeks at 35-hours each week beginning no earlier than May 23 and ending no later than August 31.

This internship opportunity is made possible through a grant to Irving Cares by the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program. Funded by ExxonMobil and administered through the Volunteer Center of North Texas, each year the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program provides full-time college students with an eight-week paid internship to gain experience in a wide range of nonprofit community organizations. Irving Cares is one of 60 local nonprofit organization selected to participate in the program this year.

“Irving Cares is very pleased to be selected to participate in this fine program again this summer. We have found some great interns through this program, many of whom decided to join the nonprofit world after their experiences here. Interns have direct client contact and learn about the workings of a nonprofit. It’s a fantastic opportunity for both the intern and the agency,” said Teddie Story, Irving Cares Executive Director.

College students interested in the internship position may contact Mary Shelton, Employment Services Case Manager, at (972) 721-9181, ext. 207, or mshelton@irvingcares.org. A job description and a sample timeline of duties are online at www.irvingcares.org/intern2011. For a complete list of agencies participating in the 2011 ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program, internship applicants should visit the Volunteer Center of North Texas web site at www.vcnt.org.

About Irving Cares:

Ensuring that basic human needs are met is an important measure of a city’s quality of life. This is what Irving citizens believed 53 years ago when they founded Irving Cares, and it is still true today.

Since 1957, Irving Cares has offered a hand up, not a handout, for Irving families in crisis. The agency served more than 37,000 people in the Irving community last year, and needs continue to increase. By providing limited financial assistance for rent, mortgage, utilities, transportation to medical facilities and prescription deliveries; and information and referral, Irving Cares promotes a client’s self-sufficiency.
