The Arlington Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Monday, May 20, 2024, in the 3700 block of Shady Valley Drive.
At approximately 9:55 a.m., officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at a home on Shady Valley Drive. A 20-year-old man had argued with a family member about his alleged drug use, prompting the family member to call 911.
When officers arrived, the man had left the scene. They found him nearby and determined no crime had been committed. As they prepared to frisk him, the man fled. Since he was not under arrest, officers did not pursue him but informed the family member of the situation.
Later, a homeowner reported that a man with a gun approached them and demanded money. The suspect, matching the description of the 20-year-old, left without harming the homeowner or taking any money. Now suspecting the man was armed, officers began searching for him.
The family member then reported the man returned home and attempted to leave in a pickup truck. Officers saw a firearm as the man backed out of the driveway. A pursuit ensued when the man failed to stop for police. During the pursuit, the suspect allegedly fired a shot at an officer, who was unharmed.
The chase ended when the suspect collided with another vehicle, causing non-life-threatening injuries to the other driver. The man fled on foot and was found at a nearby home.
Two officers fired their weapons, striking the man. He was handcuffed and received aid before being transported to a hospital. He is expected to survive. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
Investigators believe the man fired shots during the pursuit and inside the family member’s home, but no one was injured.
The suspect will face multiple charges, including Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Assault Family Violence, and Evading.
Standard investigations are underway to review the incident and officers' conduct. The officers involved are on paid administrative leave.
