The metroplex endured severe weather conditions for several hours last night. Irving residents were put on high alert with tornadic conditions throughout the city by news channels.
"I could see the rotation above us," said one resident near 183 and Carl Rd, " I was glued to the news channels for a couple of hours while keeping the kids safe in a closet away from the windows."
Wind gusts at more than 60 mph had people on edge. Storm sirens sounded across Irving to warn residents. A tornado was reported to briefly touchdown in South Irving near Hunter Ferrell and Beltline Rd.
Irving Police report, "The City of Irving activated the Outdoor Warning System on three different occasions. Public safety operations continued throughout the event and were not hindered in any way."
Irving is waking up to a few power outages in the area. Oncor trucks could be seen around the city restoring power during the night. Hail damage has been significant around North Irving and near DFW Airport.
"Numerous city vehicles and buildings sustained minor to moderate hail and wind damage. Numerous trees were knocked down and at least one home was damaged. Power to several traffic signals was lost but quickly restored using generators. Minor damage was reported at the Four Seasons Resort where the Byron Nelson is taking place. There were numerous injury and non-injury accidents reported during the storm but none of the injuries were life threatening. At approximately 10:25 p.m. an Irving Police Officer was on Loop 12 at Shady Grove placing flares in the road when he was struck by lightning. He was transported to the Hospital where he was admitted for observation and is listed in good condition.", from Irving Police Release.
