Incumbent Mayor Herbert Gears, came in second (37%) to former Councilwoman Beth Van Duyne with 41% of the vote.
Herbert Gears has been Irving's mayor since 2005. Van Duyne served on the council from 2004 to 2010.
Gears and Van Duyne will square off in the June 18th runoff election.
In the District 3 race, former planning and zoning commissioner, Dennis Webb, is also heading to a runoff election after getting 48% of the vote. Business owner David Gutierrez is challengin him after receiving 26% of the votes.
In the District 5 race, incumbent Rose Cannaday defeated her opponent, Julie D. Grant, a small-business owner.
