Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) has reported the first death from West Nile Virus (WNV) in the county for the 2024 season. The deceased was a female resident of the 75230 zip code (North Dallas) with underlying health conditions and had been diagnosed with West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease. DCHHS is not disclosing further details about the patient due to privacy reasons.
Dr. Philip Huang, Director of DCHHS, emphasized the importance of protecting against mosquito bites to prevent WNV and other mosquito-borne diseases. He reminded residents to follow the Four Ds—dusk and dawn avoidance, dressing in long sleeves and pants, using DEET insect repellent, and draining standing water—to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
