Fort Worth is addressing the digital divide by enhancing internet access in economically disadvantaged areas. The city has introduced a new wireless internet service in five neighborhoods: Stop Six, Ash Crescent, Northside, Rosemont, and Como, aiming to provide essential connectivity for education, job searches, and telemedicine.
In collaboration with Sprocket Networks, Fort Worth plans to expand high-speed fiber internet to additional areas over the next three years. Sprocket Networks will develop a fiber network to connect city locations and neighborhoods that currently lack reliable internet.
Public feedback on the initiative was gathered during the TX BDO Industry Roundtable on July 30.
Key Details:
- 5 neighborhoods: Already benefiting from wireless internet.
- 3 years: Expected timeframe to complete the high-speed fiber network.
Next Steps: The city is creating a Digital Navigator’s Program to assist residents with acquiring devices, affordable internet, and digital skills training.
Fort Worth is committed to bridging the digital divide and ensuring all residents have access to vital online resources and opportunities.
