In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 17, 2024, the Waxahachie Police Department (WPD) responded to a “shots fired” call in the area of East Criddle Street. Multiple callers reported hearing several gunshots followed by screeching tires. Shortly after, officers were dispatched to a “welfare check” in the same area.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a 24-year-old Hispanic male resident of Waxahachie with a gunshot wound to his chest in the 200 block of East Criddle Street. Despite life-saving efforts by personnel from both the WPD and Waxahachie Fire-Rescue Department, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The victim’s identity is being withheld out of respect for the family.
The WPD’s Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Unit quickly initiated an investigation. Detectives gathered information that led to securing an arrest warrant for 28-year-old Wilfredo Ramos. The Southern Regional Response Group was notified to assist in the apprehension.
At 4:35 p.m., Ramos surrendered by exiting his home in the 100 block of Butler Lane and was detained by WPD officers and detectives. He was subsequently booked into the Wayne McCollum Detention Center and charged with murder.
WPD expressed gratitude to the Southern Regional Response Group, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety for their assistance in the investigation. Authorities believe the suspect acted alone and do not anticipate further threats to the community.
