Investigators with the Killeen Police Department Traffic Unit are probing a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred early on August 18, 2024.
At approximately 4:15 a.m., officers responded to a report of a vehicle-pedestrian collision in the 3300 block of S Fort Hood Road. Upon arrival, they found a male pedestrian with severe injuries. The victim was airlifted to Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Temple, where he was listed in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Cliff Coleman at 4:50 p.m.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the pedestrian, 20-year-old Rontario Simmons, was crossing S Fort Hood Road from west to east. He was struck by a black Chevrolet SUV traveling north on S Fort Hood Road as the vehicle entered the left turn lane to turn onto W Elms Road. Simmons was reportedly not using a crosswalk and was in a poorly lit area, wearing dark clothing.
The driver of the SUV and two passengers did not report any injuries. The Killeen Police Department Traffic Unit is continuing its investigation into the incident.
