Teen Fatally Shot in Crowley Domestic Dispute Over Video Game, Suspect Arrested After Manhunt

Deeven Letroy Jones

On Sunday, August 18, 2024, at approximately 1:01 p.m., the Crowley Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a shooting in the 1200 block of Celeste Street. Officers arrived to find 16-year-old Tavion Kyree Swindell suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate aid from officers and emergency services, Swindell was transported to John Peter Smith (JPS) Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.

The investigation revealed that the fatal shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute over a video game. According to the affidavit, Swindell and 35-year-old Deeven Letroy Jones, of Crowley, were playing video games together when Swindell’s sister entered the residence. During the game, the two reportedly engaged in “smack talking.” As the game progressed, Jones mentioned he needed to leave, to which Swindell responded that he couldn’t wait to beat people in the game. Jones then reportedly said Swindell couldn’t even beat him. Swindell replied, “Who can’t?” At this point, Jones allegedly pulled out a gun, placed it against Swindell’s chest, and shot him.

Following the shooting, Jones reportedly instructed Swindell’s sister not to call the police before fleeing the residence with the weapon.

Jones was captured later that evening in Fort Worth after a manhunt that lasted several hours. He was taken into custody and transported to the Tarrant County Jail, where he was arraigned on the following charges:

  • Murder – Bail set at $250,000
  • Tamper/Fabricate Physical Evidence With Intent To Impair – Bail set at $10,000

The investigation is ongoing.
