The Irving Police Department will be partnering with approximately 200 law enforcement agencies across Texas in the largest No-Refusal effort in the nation. The Independence Day Impaired Driving Mobilization (DWI Enforcement) grant will kick off on June 27 and continue through July 6. During this time, the Irving Police Department will have additional officers on the roadways looking for drivers using excessive speed, displaying aggressive driving, or showing signs of being impaired. The focus of the increased enforcement is to strictly enforce DWI laws. During the weekend of July 1–4, the Irving Police Department will be utilizing a “No-Refusal” approach to DWI enforcement. Officers will offer a blood test only (no breath test will be offered) to those suspected of driving while intoxicated. Once a person is arrested for DWI, they will be transported to the Irving Police Department, North station. A Judge will be present in order to authorize a warrant for a blood draw on all refusals and a nurse will be on hand to conduct the blood draw. Jail personnel will be at the location to handle the “Book-In” process, as well as take custody of the arrestee. The Independence Day weekend is a time of increased travel and statistically the Fourth of July is the number one holiday for alcohol-related fatal crashes, therefore the Irving Police would like to remind drivers of the need to exercise caution and maintain awareness while driving. If you see a driver or vehicle that needs our attention, please call 9-1-1. Lieutenant Stephan Granberry with the Irving Police Traffic Section stated, “Public awareness and compliance from previous high-visibility enforcement efforts has continued to yield success in our efforts to reduce the occurrence and severity of vehicle accidents, injuries and the tragic results they cause.”
