Irving City Council Enacts New Irrigation Guidelines

As drought conditions persist in North Texas, the City Council has enacted a new ordinance that provides irrigation guidelines for Irving homeowners and property managers. Through Oct. 31, watering must occur before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. Previously, the city relied entirely on its Drought Contingency Plan for irrigation standards. Stage 1 of the city’s plan, which began May 15, involves voluntary watering no more than twice per week, according to the following schedule.

  • Sunday and Wednesday – odd-numbered addresses (e.g., 333)
  • Tuesday and Saturday – even-numbered addresses (e.g., 1202)
  • Monday, Thursday and Friday – no outdoor watering

“While we encourage use of the twice-per week schedule for watering, the new time-of-day restrictions are most important,” said Water Utilities Director Todd Reck. “When irrigation occurs during late evening, night time or early morning hours, the water is more likely to achieve its intended purpose.”

Until mid-July, those watering during the restricted hours will receive warnings. After that time, those who violate the city ordinance are subject to fines up to $2,000.
