Arlington Police Make Arrest of Murder Suspect in August Shooting Death of 20-Year-Old

Sundall Barnes

The Arlington Police Department has arrested 21-year-old Sundall Barnes in connection with the murder of 20-year-old Zoin Hodges. Hodges was shot and killed near a car wash along Brown Boulevard on August 30, 2024.

Following a detailed investigation by multiple APD units, Barnes was taken into custody and booked into the Arlington City Jail on charges including one count of Murder. He has since been transferred to the Tarrant County Jail where he remains detained.

Homicide detectives investigating the case received several tips identifying Barnes, also known as "Maxxo," as the shooter. They also discovered that Barnes was a suspect in an unrelated theft case from August 13, 2024, in which he was caught on surveillance footage breaking into a vehicle and stealing a firearm. North District Geographic detectives obtained warrants for Barnes’ arrest on charges of Theft of a Firearm and Burglary of a Motor Vehicle.

On September 7, 2024, officers from the APD Community Action Team conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle along Brown Boulevard. Barnes, a passenger in the vehicle, was identified as having active warrants related to the theft case. He was taken into custody, and during a search of the vehicle, the stolen firearm was recovered.

After Barnes was detained, Homicide detectives attempted to interview him about the shooting, but he chose not to speak and requested an attorney.

The recovered firearm was test-fired, and shell casings from the test-fire were entered into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN). The shell casings matched those recovered from the murder scene, leading to a warrant charging Barnes with Murder.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but investigators do not believe it was random. It appears Hodges was walking from an apartment complex to a nearby motel when the shooting occurred.

Barnes is currently incarcerated at the Tarrant County Jail on an $82,000 bond.
