Irving News in Brief - July 13, 2011

New Irrigation Guidelines: Through Oct. 31, watering must occur before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. according to new requirements enacted by the City Council. In addition, voluntary watering per the city’s Drought Contingency Plan encourages residents to adhere to the following schedule:
 
  • Sunday and Wednesday: Odd-numbered addresses (e.g., 333)
  • Tuesday and Saturday: Even-numbered addresses (e.g., 1202)
  • Monday, Thursday and Friday: no outdoor watering
 
Until mid-July, those watering during restricted hours will receive warnings. After that time, those who violate the city ordinance are subject to fines up to $2,000.
 
 
Ask the Budget Guy: To enhance transparency and provide the community with accurate information regarding financial matters, the City of Irving offers residents direct access to the “Budget Guy.” Ask the Budget Guy questions regarding the FY 2011-12 budget by sending an email to knowthefacts@cityofirving.org. The Budget Guy will respond to all questions and post answers to the city’s Ask the Budget Guy webpage. Submittals are subject to editing for content, tone and clarity. All submissions will be posted anonymously.
 
 
Energy Conservation Know How: The “Energy Conservation Know How” course will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 19 at the West Irving Library, 4444 W. Rochelle Road. Students will learn simple auditing techniques for detecting drafty areas in the home as well as inexpensive follow-up solutions to fixing those leaks. Register for this educational opportunity.
 
 
Drip Irrigation Class: A drip irrigation class will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 26 at Valley Ranch Library, 401 Cimarron Trail. This class is designed for those who want to self-install a drip irrigation system or anyone wanting knowledge on selecting a drip irrigation method for a professional to install. Register for this educational opportunity.
 
 
Summer Reading Clubs: The Irving Public Library is hosting Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens and adults through July 31. While supplies last, participants will have the chance to win prizes for reading. Summer Reading Clubs are being organized at all library locations. Supplies for Success: Make a difference in a child’s life through the Supplies for Success Drive. Sponsored by the mayor and the Irving Fire Department, the drive will provide school supplies to Irving ISD children from low-income families. Purchase school supplies and make donations at any Irving fire station through Aug. 7. To make a financial contribution, make check payable to Irving ISD and mail to P.O. Grant Applications: Grant funding, between the amounts of $250 and $1,500, is available to neighborhood associations for neighborhood beautification, special events, newsletters and website development. Dallas Puppet Theater Show: The Dallas Puppet Theater will deliver a musical variety show featuring oversized stringed puppets at 2:30 p.m. July 20 at the West Irving Library, 4444 W. Rochelle Road. Cat Adoption Special: Through Aug. 26, the Irving Animal Care Campus (IACC), 4140 Valley View Lane, is sponsoring a Free Feline Friday promotion where cats 6 months and older are available for free adoptions every Friday (limit two cats per household). Genghis Khan Exhibit: Through Sept. 30, the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd., is hosting Genghis Khan: The Exhibition. Attendees will relive Khan’s epic rise to power. Volunteer Opportunity: The Irving Arts Center is seeking nominations for volunteers to service on the Advisory Grant Review Panel starting in September. Book Release Party: Teens, grades 6-12, are invited to celebrate the release of Kiersten White’s new book, “Supernaturally,” at 2 p.m. July 28 at the Irving Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd. This free event will feature games, trivia, crafts and snacks.
 
 
Buck-a-Book Children’s Book Sale: The Friends of the Irving Public Library will host a special children’s discount book sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 13 and 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Irving Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd. Every book will sell for $1 and proceeds will benefit the library.
 
 
Communication Survey: A communication survey has been developed and posted to the city website to obtain input from residents about the communication tools used to promote city services and programs. Residents can provide input on the “City Spectrum” newsletter, Irving Community Television Network and designate what types of information they find important.
