South Irving Library Community Input Meeting: The Irving Public Library invites residents to review plans for the new South Irving Library by participating in a community input meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11 in the City Council Conference Room at City Hall, 825 W. Irving Blvd. Construction is slated to begin in 2012. For more information, call (972) 721-2628. Residents also can provide input online.
 
 
Police Community Meeting: A community meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Heritage Senior Center, 200 S. Jefferson St., to inform residents and businesses about the Police Department Problem Solving Team’s plan to create a safer southeast Irving.
 
 
Educational Opportunity: The class, Environmental Sustainability and the Economy, will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Valley Ranch Library, 401 Cimarron Trail, to teach students the right questions to ask when researching investment opportunities in the environmental field. Buck-a-Book Children’s Book Sale: The Friends of the Irving Public Library will host a special children’s discount book sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 13 and 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Irving Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd. Every book will sell for $1 and proceeds will benefit the library.
 
 
Child Immunizations: Free immunizations will be given to 500 eligible VFC-eligible, school-aged children at the Back to School Fiesta from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at Irving Mall, on the lower level near the food court. Screenings will begin at 2 p.m. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and have a shot record. For more information, call (972) 255-0571.
 
 
Educational Opportunity: The class, Greywater Irrigation Systems, is being offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 18 to teach residents about irrigation methods using water from sources within the home, like sinks and washing machines. Cat Adoption Special: Through Aug. 26, the Irving Animal Care Campus (IACC), 4140 Valley View Lane, is sponsoring a Free Feline Friday promotion where cats 6 months and older are available for free adoptions every Friday (limit two cats per household). Educational Opportunity: As part of the slow food movement, Bring on the Chef, is being held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Heritage Senior Center, 200 S. Jefferson St. The class will discuss the benefits of cooking at home with local produce. Participants will be treated to tasty fare prepared by the chef. Free Legal: Get free legal advice at 2 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Irving Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd. A community service program provided by Dallas Association of Young Lawyers, the Ask-a-Lawyer program gives attendees a chance to seek legal advice for free. If a question requires more in-depth expertise or cannot be answered in 15 minutes, the attendee will be referred to the Dallas Bar Association. For more information, call (972) 721-2606.
 
 
Disaster Training: Members of the Irving community are invited to become a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member. A free, two-day training is being offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 24-25 at the Irving Police and Fire Training Academy, 2603 Esters Road. Participants will be trained to be self-sufficient for up to 72 hours following a major incident and learn how to provide critical support to professional first responders, assistance to disaster victims, and how to spontaneously organize volunteers at disaster sites. Trash Collection Holiday: In observance of Labor Day, there will be no residential trash, curbside recycling or brush collection on Sept. 5. In addition, City Hall; Heritage and North Lake aquatic centers; the Hunter Ferrell Landfilll; Irving Public Libraries, as well as recreation and recycling centers will be closed. All offices and services will resume normal business hours Sept. 6.
 
 
Grant Applications: Grant funding, between the amounts of $250 and $1,500, is available to neighborhood associations for neighborhood beautification, special events, newsletters and website development. To be considered, submit completed application by Oct. 7. Award recipients will be notified by Oct. 28. For more information, call (972) 721-2533.
 
 
Communication Survey: A communication survey has been developed and posted to the city website to obtain input from residents about the communication tools used to promote city services and programs. Residents can provide input on the “City Spectrum” newsletter, Irving Community Television Network and designate what types of information they find important.
