Dallas College, known for educating thousands of students each year, is joining forces with Be Pro Be Proud to shape the next generation of skilled trade workers in Texas. Be Pro Be Proud, an organization that raises awareness about technical skill trade jobs in fields like construction, welding, manufacturing, transportation, and utilities, is expanding its reach into Texas.

Originally launched by the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce, Be Pro Be Proud aims to address the growing demand for skilled workers through a mobile workshop equipped with virtual and augmented reality simulators. The technology allows students to explore career paths in skilled trades through immersive simulations.

“At Dallas College, we are committed to staying helpful and relevant to our business partners in the workforce,” said Dr. Christa Slejko, president of Dallas College North Lake Campus. “When the idea came to bring this initiative to Texas, Be Pro Be Proud was looking for partners to help, and as a regional economic driver, we were one of the first organizations to champion the effort.”

The partnership brings Be Pro Be Proud's mobile workshop to middle schools, high schools, and community spaces like Dallas College campuses, offering students a firsthand look at skilled trade careers. The mobile campaign is expected to visit more than 45,000 North Texas students over the next three years, with around 300 tour dates planned.

“Be Pro Be Proud’s cool technology and equipment will dazzle you,” said Dr. Timothy Samuels, assistant vice chancellor of innovation and business strategy at Dallas College. “It’s a great chance to appeal to the pipeline and discover future talent opportunities with middle and high schoolers.”

Post-workshop surveys have shown that 74% of students think differently about trade careers after the experience, and 69% have a more favorable view of the skilled trades. North Texas is the first region in the state to pilot the program.

“Between our traditional credit routes and workforce and customized training, Dallas College offers pathways to connect students to the skilled workforce,” Slejko added. “What’s good for high school is also good for college, which is good for employers and ultimately, the region.”

Texas is now the eighth state to join the Be Pro Be Proud movement.
