Disability committe to host studen poster contest

The Irving Advisory Committee on Disabilities is hosting its annual poster contest in recognition of National Disability Awareness Month in October.

The poster contest, for students in the fifth grade, provides participants with an opportunity to showcase artistic talents as they express how a person with disabilities can use his or her abilities to be part of the community. Each entry will be judged on the originality of concept and the content of how it relates to people with disabilities. A previous example of artwork has included children with a disability playing a sport with children who are not disabled. Irving students in public, private or home school are invited to participate in the contest.

“Through their artwork, young people can illustrate how those with disabilities make a difference in our community,” said Mary Tatro, chairman of the Irving Advisory Committee on Disabilities.

Entry deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 16. Awards will be presented at the Oct. 6 City Council meeting. Posters will be on display for the public. For details on the contest, visit www.cityofirving.org or call (972) 721-2501.
