Kennedale Man Arrested After Threatening Family with Gun, Stepson Shot Back In Self-Defense

On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Kennedale Police responded to a shooting report at the Alta Landing Apartments on 3100 Joplin Road around 10:00 a.m. The incident was initially reported as a family member attempting to shoot the complainant after a domestic altercation.

Officers evacuated neighboring apartments and made contact with the alleged shooter, who was reportedly still armed inside. The individual cooperated with authorities and was detained without incident. However, further investigation revealed that the initial complainant, 35-year-old Rodrick Jamichael Smith, was actually the aggressor.

According to police, Smith had pointed a loaded handgun at three other individuals inside the apartment: his wife, his 21-year-old stepson Jaden Adams, and Adams’s girlfriend. After Smith allegedly aimed the gun at Adams's girlfriend, Adams, who was armed, fired one shot at Smith but missed. Smith fled the apartment and called the police.

No injuries were reported, and the bullet was recovered by crime scene technicians. Smith was arrested and charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. He was transported to the Mansfield Detention Center.

Police stated that Jaden Adams is not facing charges, but the case remains under investigation.
