Dallas Mayor Highlights Safety, Parks, and Economic Growth in 2024 State of the City Address

Mayor Johnson

In his 2024 State of the City Address, Mayor Eric L. Johnson delivered a strong message about the city’s progress, touching on public safety, parks, street improvements, and tax relief as key components driving Dallas’ growth.

Johnson began by emphasizing the success of his administration’s focus on the “four P’s”: public safety, parks, potholes, and property tax relief. He noted that the city’s momentum has been sustained through significant investments in infrastructure, public safety, and green spaces.

Dallas has seen a decrease in violent crime for four consecutive years, with murders down nearly 30% from the previous year. Johnson credited these results to data-driven public safety strategies and the dedication of the Dallas Police Department. He also paid tribute to Officer Darron Burks, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty in August, and reaffirmed the city’s commitment to supporting police officers and first responders.

The mayor also spotlighted the city’s bond program, which has allocated over $90 million for public safety facilities and $520 million for street improvements. Through these investments, Dallas has focused on enhancing neighborhoods, with smoother streets and lessening the impact of potholes.

Parks, too, have been a priority. Johnson detailed the city's record-breaking investment of $345 million in its park system through the 2024 Bond Program. The commitment has already expanded access to green spaces, with three-quarters of Dallas residents now living within a 10-minute walk of a park. He highlighted new projects such as Halperin Park, a deck park over Interstate 35, and Harold Simmons Park along the Trinity River, which will offer recreational spaces and serve as economic drivers for surrounding areas.

The mayor also emphasized Dallas’ growth as a financial and sports hub, recognizing the city's rise as the No. 2 financial capital in the country and its role in hosting major international events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The expansion of professional women's sports, including the launch of Dallas Trinity FC and the relocation of the Dallas Wings to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, was also part of his address.

In closing, Johnson pointed to the city’s progress in reducing homelessness, with a 19% decrease in overall homelessness and a 24% reduction in unsheltered homelessness since 2021. He also celebrated the passage of a measure to create an independent Office of Inspector General, enhancing transparency and accountability in the city’s government.

The mayor concluded by discussing the ongoing search for a new police chief and city manager, essential roles for sustaining the city’s vision of safety and efficient service delivery. Johnson committed to continuing the city’s upward trajectory, focusing on public safety, infrastructure, and the economic prosperity of Dallas.
