Parker County Sheriff Expands Investigative Team to Tackle Financial Crimes

Deputy Christian Townsend

Parker County Sheriff Russ Authier has announced the addition of a financial crimes investigator to the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID), addressing the growing prevalence of financial scams and fraud in the region.

“Financial crimes and related scams are among some of the fastest-growing crimes in Texas,” said Sheriff Authier. The expansion follows a sharp increase in reported financial crimes, both locally and nationwide. The Federal Trade Commission reported $10 billion in financial crime losses across the United States in 2023, nearly double the amount reported in 2021.

Parker County has seen a significant rise in cases as well. In 2020, the Parker County Sheriff’s Office CID handled 209 financial crimes cases. By 2023, that number grew to 331, marking a 58% increase. Cases have ranged from wire fraud and forgery to identity theft and ATM fraud.

Previously, these cases were assigned to property crimes investigators on a rotating basis. The growing complexity of financial crimes, however, highlighted the need for a dedicated specialist.

Following unanimous approval from the Parker County Commissioner’s Court, Deputy Christian Townsend was promoted to the newly created position.

Inv. Townsend, who joined the Parker County Sheriff’s Office in January 2023, brings seven years of law enforcement experience from New Mexico, including investigations of major crimes and federal offenses. He holds advanced peace officer training and both undergraduate and graduate degrees in fields related to law enforcement and public safety.

“The complexity of many financial crimes requires specialized investigative techniques and expertise to trace transactions, particularly with the rise of digital currency,” Sheriff Authier explained.

In his short time in the role, Inv. Townsend has recovered or frozen over $60,000 stolen in fraudulent schemes. In October, he seized $17,220 from an account linked to a financial scheme and secured a seizure warrant for an account containing over $43,000 connected to another fraud case. Townsend has also made several arrests and issued additional warrants related to ongoing investigations.

Sheriff Authier expressed gratitude to the Parker County Commissioner’s Court for funding the new position, emphasizing the need for prompt and effective responses to combat financial crimes.
