Dallas Partners with Mavs Take Action to Highlight First-Generation American Experiences

The City of Dallas has announced an exciting collaboration with Dallas Mavericks’ Mavs Take Action on the release of their latest Huddle Series: First-Generation American Experiences. This impactful docuseries features a diverse group of influential first-generation American leaders in the DFW area, including NBA Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki and Christina da Silva, Assistant Director of the City of Dallas Office of Equity and Inclusion.

The series explores the personal stories of eight Dallasites, showcasing their challenges, triumphs, and the critical resources that helped them succeed. The initiative aligns with the mission of the City’s Office of Equity and Inclusion, which works to bridge the gap between Dallas’ immigrant and resident communities to foster shared leadership and common ground.

Dr. Lindsey Wilson, Director of the City of Dallas Office of Equity and Inclusion, expressed, “We are pleased to partner with Dallas Mavs Take Action on this project, highlighting First-Generation Americans that call Dallas home and providing valuable resources to the community. Immigrants comprise 23% of our city’s population, contributing significantly to its vitality.”

The City of Dallas also demonstrated its commitment to supporting the immigrant community during a Naturalization Ceremony on December 6, 2024, at City Hall. In collaboration with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), 30 residents from 19 countries took the oath of U.S. citizenship.

Liz Cedillo-Pereira, Assistant City Manager of Dallas, stated, “The U.S. Naturalization ceremony at City Hall celebrates our residents taking the solemn oath of citizenship and their invaluable contributions to shaping our vibrant community.”

For those interested in applying for U.S. citizenship, the City of Dallas provides a comprehensive resource guide, including access to local nonprofits offering free or low-cost legal assistance and citizenship classes, available at Dallas Public Library locations starting in January.
