A 52-year-old man, later identified as Michael Alonzo, is in stable but critical condition after being shot by Dallas police officers on January 7, 2025, in the 11000 block of Joaquin Drive.
At approximately 3:15 p.m., the Dallas Police Department received six 911 calls reporting a man pointing a gun at vehicles as they drove by him. Witnesses described the suspect as a Hispanic male wearing a red hoodie and grey sweatpants.
Officers Juan Lopez-Navarro and Nathaniel Cairns arrived on scene around 3:21 p.m. and observed Alonzo standing in the street, pointing a handgun at a person in a passing vehicle. The officers gave verbal commands in both English and Spanish, but Alonzo did not comply. Officer Lopez-Navarro, in body camera footage, can be heard saying, “He’s got a gun in his hand.”
Despite continued commands to drop the weapon, Alonzo was seen pointing the gun. Officer Cairns then stated, “He’s pointing it, he’s pointing it,” prompting both officers to discharge their firearms, striking Alonzo.
Dallas Fire Rescue arrived shortly afterward, and Alonzo was transported to a local hospital. He remains in stable but critical condition.
The weapon recovered at the scene was determined to be a replica firearm, a Crosman revolver CO2 air pistol.
Alonzo faces three counts of deadly conduct, with additional charges possible. His criminal history includes prior arrests for prostitution and theft by check.
No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident. The Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit is conducting the ongoing investigation, with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office and the Office of Community Police Oversight also involved in separate reviews. To ensure transparency, the Dallas Police Department is releasing 911 audio, as well as dashcam and body-worn camera footage from the officers.
