Dallas County Launches Dedicated Human Trafficking Unit to Combat Sex Trafficking

Dallas DA John Creuzot

Dallas County Criminal District Attorney John Creuzot has announced the establishment of a dedicated Human Trafficking Unit (HTU), marking a significant step in the county’s efforts to combat human trafficking in North Texas. The launch comes in conjunction with Human Trafficking Prevention Month, highlighting the county’s ongoing commitment to addressing this growing issue.

The new initiative, supported by a $207,520 grant from the Office of the Governor, will fund a specialized prosecutor who will focus exclusively on adult and child human trafficking cases. The unit will also consist of an investigator and a victim advocate, ensuring a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the investigation and prosecution of trafficking crimes. This team will work to enhance the support for survivors while also ensuring that traffickers are held accountable for their actions.

“This grant enables us to provide the resources and specialized expertise needed to combat this heinous crime,” said DA Creuzot. “Human trafficking is one of the most despicable crimes we face, and Dallas County continues to be a hotspot for these cases. This new unit strengthens our ability to tackle the complexity of these cases and, most importantly, provides trauma-informed support to survivors.”

Dallas ranks among the top 10 cities in the United States for sex trafficking, with numerous cases involving not only local jurisdictions but also victims who are often reluctant to cooperate due to trauma and fear. Trafficking investigations can be particularly challenging, as they frequently span multiple jurisdictions and require complex evidence gathering. Survivors often hesitate to work with law enforcement due to their experiences, making these cases difficult to prosecute.

The creation of the HTU will ensure that all human trafficking cases handled by the DA’s office are reviewed and processed by a single, dedicated prosecutor, offering victims consistency and building trust throughout the legal process. The unit’s dedicated victim advocate will work directly with survivors, providing regular contact and support while also helping to coordinate care services.

In addition to direct support for survivors, the HTU will enhance coordination with vital partners, including the North Texas Anti-Trafficking Task Force, local law enforcement, and federal agencies. By acting as a 24/7 liaison, the unit will help streamline communication between the DA's office and local, state, and federal partners, improving the efficiency of investigations and prosecutions.

“Our goal is to create a justice system that not only holds traffickers accountable but also prioritizes the needs and dignity of survivors,” DA Creuzot added. “This unit embodies our commitment to transformative change and justice for all."
