The Garland Police Department has announced that retired Lieutenant and Police Boxing Gym Program Manager Dave Swavey will be inducted into the National Law Enforcement Officer Hall of Fame. He is set to receive the prestigious Scherer-Remsberg Lifetime Achievement Award at an official ceremony this April.

Lt. Swavey began his law enforcement career with the Garland Police Department in July 1981 and rose to the rank of lieutenant in 1991. During his 34-year tenure, he served in multiple units, including Patrol, K9, Gang Unit, School Resource Officer (SRO), and SWAT, retiring in December 2015.

Even after retirement, Lt. Swavey continued serving the community as the civilian coordinator for the Garland Police Boxing Gym Program. For nearly three decades, he has co-managed the gym, which serves as a safe haven for at-risk youth, offering a structured environment where participants are encouraged to stay out of trouble, maintain respect, and achieve passing grades.

Lt. Swavey is also a co-founder of the Guns and Hoses Foundation of North Texas, an organization dedicated to supporting first responders and their families in times of need. His contributions have earned him numerous awards, including the Garland Sports Hall of Fame’s Homer B. Johnson Legacy Award.

Lt. Swavey’s dedication to service has positively impacted countless lives, from mentoring at-risk youth to supporting first responder families. His induction into the National Law Enforcement Officer Hall of Fame recognizes his extraordinary commitment to both law enforcement and the community.

The Garland Police Department extends its congratulations to Lt. Dave Swavey for this well-deserved honor.
