City Progresses on the Journey to Beautify City Streets, Corridors

The City of Irving Capital Improvement Program Team is progressing on street improvements in the northern and southern sections of the city.

Aesthetic Achievements

Grant-funded beautification improvements have been completed on the east and west ends of Irving Boulevard. Improvements that have helped beautify the area include tree plantings, stone planters with native grasses and gateway signs. These projects were funded by a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation through Keep Texas Beautiful.

“We are fortunate as one of a handful of cities in the state to be recognized with the Governor’s Community Achievement Award (GCAA) and receive the grant funding from Keep Texas Beautiful,” said Keep Irving Beautiful Coordinator Rick Hose.

Criteria for receiving the award include the involvement of residents, businesses, schools and youth in a community beautification project. Successfully meeting the criteria earned the City of Irving more than $300,000 in landscaping funds.

Coming Advancements

The corridor improvements on Irving Boulevard are just a slice of the pie of progress that is positively impacting the city,” said Capital Improvement Program Director Casey Tate. “We’re already a little more than halfway complete on the Northgate Drive project, which involves street and sewer improvements near the University of Dallas between Carl Road and Tom Braniff Drive.

The contractor has completed most of the elements of the Northgate project. The northern section of the roadway has been opened to motorists while progress continues on the utility connections and storm drainage on the south side of the roadway. Staff is completing design work on the median and intersection beautification and that work will begin as the road construction is finished. The project is scheduled for completion early 2012.

Down the Road

By late 2012, community members will notice additional improvements to O’Connor Road including the reconstruction of the roadway between State Highway 183 (SH 183) and Rochelle Road. As part of this project, the intersection of Brockbank and O’Connor roads has been removed and a cul-de-sac has been constructed on Brockbank.

“Construction of the O’Connor Road project is scheduled to begin in January,” said Tate. “A major change will be the construction of two new lanes each way with a center left turn lane the entire length between Rochelle Road and SH 183.”

Additional corridor projects planned include roadway improvements on Grauwyler Road and construction of a section of the Jamison water line.
