The Springtown Police Department has identified and arrested a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred on Saturday, February 1, 2025, on North Main Street near Old Cottondale Road.
At approximately 4:21 PM, officers responded to reports of an auto vs. pedestrian incident. Witnesses at the scene described an altercation between two male drivers in a possible road rage situation, who had both pulled over. The suspect allegedly broke off the rearview mirror of the victim's vehicle, leading to a physical confrontation. At some point during the altercation, the suspect is said to have returned to his vehicle and driven off, striking and possibly dragging the victim in the process. The suspect then fled the scene.
Witnesses described the suspect as a middle-aged to older white male of average build with light or gray hair.
Following an investigation and public assistance, officers from the Springtown Police Department and Weatherford Police Department arrested 24-year-old Aaron Phillip Turner of Weatherford on February 3, 2025. He was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The victim, 60-year-old Ronald Lee Smith of Springtown, died from his injuries on February 5, 2025. As a result, Turner's charge was upgraded to manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond has been set at $350,000.
