18-Year-Old Sentenced to Life for Murder of Girlfriend After Paternity Test Reveal

Trevon Wright

Trevon Darnell Wright, 18, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend, Ikea I'Mari Hood, after a Dallas jury found him guilty on January 7, 2024. The defendant shot Hood in the back of the head while she was asleep in her bedroom, just feet away from their newborn baby.

The couple had been in an on-and-off relationship during high school. In May 2023, Hood learned she was pregnant, and although rumors circulated about the baby's paternity, Wright remained involved. The couple, along with their families, met at Hood’s house after a paternity test revealed Wright was not the father. That day, Wright left but later returned, pleading to see the victim and her baby over the following days.

On the morning of January 7, 2024, Wright visited Hood's home and spent time with her and the baby. Later, while Hood was lying in bed with the baby in a bassinet nearby, Wright shot her in the back of the head. He fled through a bedroom window, leaving behind evidence, including a shoe and fingerprints. The victim’s mother and brother discovered Hood's body shortly afterward.

During trial, Wright claimed the shooting was accidental, asserting that he had brought the gun to the house intending to harm himself, but the victim intervened, causing the gun to discharge. However, the jury rejected his defense, instead focusing on his controlling behavior, abusive messages sent to Hood in the months leading up to the murder, and his gang affiliation.

The jury also heard recordings of Wright's jailhouse phone calls, where he discussed using the murder charge to boost his rap career. They quickly convicted him of murder and sentenced him to life in prison.
