On Thursday, February 13th, a Parker County jury found 56-year-old Gary Donald Evans guilty of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant with a Deadly Weapon and sentenced him to 50 years in prison. Evans was convicted for shooting at three Parker County Deputies who had gone to his home to arrest him. One deputy was saved when a bullet struck a spare magazine on his duty belt, preventing a fatal injury.
The jury's decision ensures that Evans will not be eligible for parole until he is 83 years old. "We are blessed to be protected by outstanding men & women with many agencies," said District Attorney Jeff Swain.
The incident occurred on January 30, 2024, when deputies arrived at a residence in the 300 block of Lipan Trail around 3:30 p.m. to serve a warrant on Evans. Evans, who was initially standing next to a gold passenger vehicle, stepped in front of it, out of sight from officers. He then emerged from behind the vehicle, produced a handgun, and began shooting at the deputies. In response, three deputies returned fire, striking Evans multiple times.
Despite the gunfire, deputies quickly rendered aid to Evans, applying tourniquets and a chest seal before he was airlifted to a Fort Worth hospital in critical condition. One deputy, who was struck by a bullet in his magazine, was treated and later released.
The case was prosecuted by DA Jeff Swain and Assistant DA Ashley Reeve.
