Two Denton Residents Sentenced for Fatal Fentanyl Overdose in Celina

Two Denton County residents have been sentenced to federal prison for their involvement in distributing counterfeit fentanyl-laced pills that led to a fatal overdose in Celina, Texas.

On January 30, 2025, Courtney Green, 28, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl. She was sentenced to 240 months (20 years) in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant.

Tiffane Chantial Volz, 37, also of Denton, pleaded guilty to the same charges and was sentenced to 235 months (approximately 19.5 years) in federal prison on February 18, 2025.

The case stemmed from an investigation into a fatal overdose on April 15, 2023, in the 4000 block of Heatherton Drive in Celina. Autopsy results determined the victim died of pulmonary congestion and edema due to the toxic effects of fentanyl. Investigators discovered communications between the victim and Green discussing the distribution of prescription pills, leading to the identification of Volz as Green's supplier.

Celina Police Chief John Cullison emphasized the dedication of local detectives and investigators in ensuring justice for the victim and their family. He stated, "Let this serve as a warning to anyone who distributes dangerous drugs and endangers our residents—you will face the full extent of the law, just as Green and Volz have."

The investigation was conducted by the Celina Police Department's Crime Reduction Unit, with assistance from the Denton County Sheriff's Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Johnson.

These sentences highlight the ongoing efforts to combat the distribution of counterfeit fentanyl-laced pills, which have been linked to numerous overdose deaths across the United States.
