Dallas Jury Convicts Man of Christmas Eve Murder, Sentences Him to 80 Years

Reynaldo Herrera

A Dallas County jury found 51-year-old Reynaldo Herrera guilty of Murder on April 1, 2025, and sentenced him to 80 years in prison for the shooting death of David Gomez.

Herrera and Gomez had been friends for about 15 years. Four years before the murder, Herrera suspected Gomez of having an affair with his wife. Detectives found no evidence of an affair, and Herrera later admitted he no longer believed it to be true. About three to four months before the shooting, Herrera had pulled a gun on Gomez and threatened to kill him, but was separated by friends.

On December 24, 2021, Herrera was at a local bar socializing in the back parking lot. When Gomez arrived, Herrera immediately went inside the bar. Gomez remained outside speaking with friends for about ten minutes. Herrera then exited the bar and shot Gomez nine times. After the shooting, Herrera walked away, got into his truck, and left the scene.

Herrera abandoned his truck and fled to California, where he remained for over a year and a half before being apprehended in Dallas on September 24, 2023.

The case was led by Sasha Stribling, with Zack Brown serving as second chair. District Attorney Investigators Reggie Wood and Jesse Cantu, Paralegal Madelein Garcia, and Victim Advocates Franchesca Zarate and Melinda Shelton supported the prosecution. The Dallas Police Department conducted the investigation.

Jurors heard testimony that Gomez was a single father of five children. Herrera, who is an illegal immigrant, was sentenced to 80 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
