A Dallas County jury has found 40-year-old Cornell Andrews guilty of Aggravated Assault-Family Serious Bodily Injury and sentenced him to 55 years in prison.
According to court records, Andrews was in a long-term relationship with the adult female victim. After a dispute, he was told he was no longer welcome in the apartment. Andrews forcibly re-entered the residence and attacked the woman and three children with a hammer. He then bound the victims and barricaded the door with a washing machine.
One of the children managed to escape by jumping out of a second-story window and running to a nearby friend’s apartment to call 911. Police and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and assisted the victims. Andrews fled the apartment but was later apprehended.
The case was prosecuted by Lead Prosecutor Joel Abraham and Second Chair Ann Duffy. DA Investigator Barry Maxwell and Victim Advocate Nathaly Mendez also assisted. The investigation was led by the Dallas Police Department.
Andrews will serve his sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
