Joshua Emmanuel Scott, 26, who made headlines in January 2021 for the brutal murder of an Uber driver, was taken into custody on June 11, 2025, after a bench warrant was issued following a finding that he is now competent to stand trial. Scott is currently held at the Dallas County Jail.
The case dates back to Friday, January 8, 2021, when 33-year-old Uber driver Joshua Miller picked up Scott, then 21, at approximately 11:00 a.m. at the Amazon Fulfillment Center on Southlink Drive in Southern Dallas. Miller, who recorded both audio and video inside his vehicle, captured Scott pulling out a gun and demanding that Miller stop the car.
Miller complied, stopping along the 4100 block of Cleveland Road. Police said Scott then ordered Miller to place his scarf over his face. The video footage reportedly showed Scott then putting down the gun, pulling out a knife, and attempting to cut Miller's throat.
A struggle ensued during which Miller was stabbed multiple times with "multiple objects." While being choked, Miller attempted to drive away but crashed into a nearby structure as the fight continued. Investigators stated that Scott then pointed his gun at Miller, demanded his mobile phone and password, and ordered him to clean debris off the crashed vehicle. Police reported that Scott then struck and ran over Miller multiple times with Miller's own vehicle. Investigators further stated that Scott exited the car, struck Miller multiple times with a long pole or stick, before getting back behind the wheel and striking him again with the car several times.
Scott was located and arrested later that day and initially charged with Murder.
On January 15, 2021, the court ordered a competency evaluation for Scott. He was subsequently indicted on March 17, 2021, for the murder of Joshua Lee Miller. The indictment detailed that Scott "did unlawfully then and there intentionally cause the death of JOSHUA LEE MILLER, an individual... by STABBING DECEASED WITH A KNIFE AND A POLE AND A SHARP OBJECT AND BY INFLICTING BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA TO DECEASED WITH HIS HANDS AND A POLE AND A BLUNT OBJECT AND A MOTOR VEHICLE, and the defendant was then and there in the course of committing and attempting to commit the offense of ROBBERY AND KIDNAPPING of said deceased."
Another competency exam was ordered on October 21, 2021. On September 26, 2023, Scott was found to be mentally ill and incompetent to stand trial, leading to his transfer to North Texas State Hospital, Vernon, TX, Campus, a mental health facility. In-patient mental health services were extended by court order on January 25, 2025.
However, a doctor's evaluation on May 29, 2025, determined Scott to be competent to stand trial, leading to the immediate issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest. Scott is now back in custody at the Dallas County Jail, where he awaits further proceedings in the capital murder case.
