IRVING, Texas — Brent Nickerson, Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator at Irving High School, has been named the Dallas Cowboys Whataburger Coach of the Week, an honor recognizing his leadership on and off the field.
A proud Irving ISD alumnus, Nickerson attended MacArthur High School, Johnston Elementary, and Houston Middle School. He began his coaching career in the district in 2013 at MacArthur before moving to Irving High three years ago.
“This honor is truly humbling,” Nickerson said. “It represents the hard work of our coaches, players, athletic trainers, and community who have invested so much in our program. It highlights the growth, resilience, and character of our players and shines a light on the positive culture we are building at Irving High.”
In August 2025, Irving ISD was named a Texas Way District of Distinction by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association (THSADA), recognizing the district’s athletic programs for excellence in sportsmanship, discipline, character, and leadership.
Nickerson shared advice for students: “Control what you can control — your attitude, effort, and commitment. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but with consistency, discipline, and a willingness to grow, you can achieve more than you ever thought possible.”
He credited much of the team’s success to community support: “From administration to teachers, parents, and alumni, everyone plays a role in encouraging and uplifting our student-athletes. Their support reminds our players that they are part of something bigger than themselves.”
Nickerson expressed gratitude to the Dallas Cowboys, Whataburger, and the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Foundation for the recognition, emphasizing that the award “is about more than football — it’s about relationships, character, and the impact athletics can make on young people’s lives.”
