DALLAS, TX - The Dallas Police Department has released preliminary details surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday evening in East Oak Cliff (Cedar Crest area), marking the department’s first such incident of 2026.
According to investigators, officers were dispatched at approximately 5:13 p.m. on January 17, 2026, to the 1200 block of Presidio Avenue after a 9-1-1 call reported a disturbance and an active shooter. Preliminary information indicates the incident began with a disturbance in the backyard of a residence that was listed for rent. During that disturbance, a suspect discharged a firearm before leaving the location.
Around 5:20 p.m., responding officers encountered a male walking in the street while holding two firearms. Officers issued multiple verbal commands for the subject to drop the weapons, but he did not comply. Officers then discharged their service weapons, striking the suspect.
Officers immediately rendered medical aid until Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived. The suspect was transported to a local hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured during the encounter.
The suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Oscar Saldana. Police say he is expected to be charged with aggravated assault with a firearm once he is released from the hospital, with additional charges still pending. Multiple firearms were recovered at the scene.
To promote transparency, Dallas police have released portions of body-worn camera and surveillance video related to the incident.
As with all officer-involved shootings, the case is being investigated by the Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office will also conduct an independent review, and the Office of Community Police Oversight has been briefed.
The investigation remains active, and officials note that details may change as forensic evidence, witness statements, and additional video are reviewed.
